3 Easy Munich Walks for Families: Hofgarten, English Garden, and Nymphenburg

Some family travel days should be memorable because they are spectacular. Others should be memorable because nobody melts down. Munich is unusually good at the second kind of day if you choose the right routes.
For our group, which included two children and one grandparent, the easiest Munich days were not the ones where we tried to cover a long list. They were the ones built around flat spaces, easy transport, and enough room for children to move without the adults turning every ten minutes into crowd control.
These were the three Munich walks that felt easiest in real life.
1. Hofgarten into the English Garden
This route worked because it started gently. We got off at Odeonsplatz, reached Hofgarten almost immediately, and had a calm geometric garden before asking the children to do any real walking.
Hofgarten is easy to understand with children. The paths are clear, the space feels ordered rather than chaotic, and the adults can enjoy the setting while the children keep moving on flat surfaces.
From there we crossed toward the Eisbach wave and entered the English Garden. Seeing surfers in a city river was the detail that made the route click for the children. It felt strange and memorable in a way that did not need explanation.

The mistake here is to treat the English Garden like something you should finish. It is too large for that mindset to feel good with children. We had a much better day once we accepted that one section plus one good stop was enough.
2. The Chinese Tower area: where adults finally got to sit
This deserves its own section because it solved a different family problem. By the time we reached the playground near the Chinese Tower, the children still had plenty of energy. The adults did not.
That combination is common on trips, and it is why this part of the park is so useful. The playground-and-beer-garden setup lets children keep playing while adults finally stop moving.

This area can work as the destination itself, the middle of a longer walk, or simply the place where you decide the day has already succeeded.
3. Nymphenburg Palace and grounds
Nymphenburg worked for a different reason. It gave us scale without pressure. The palace grounds are large, but they do not feel frantic. The children noticed the water birds and the open space before they cared about the palace, which was a good sign. It meant the place had family value before we even started doing culture.
The grounds gave the children room to run and invent small games. For the adults, the setting still felt elegant and satisfying. It was one of the best Munich half-days when we wanted somewhere that felt substantial without becoming crowded.
The Old-Town Church Add-On That Worked
On our final day, we paired Nymphenburg with a lighter architecture walk near Karlsplatz, Michaelskirche, Frauenkirche, St. Peter’s, and Asamkirche. This worked because we did it after the children had already had open space.
That order matters. Open space first, enclosed city later, is much easier than the reverse.

We also ended that last day by stopping at Haxengrill and taking a roast pork knuckle home. It was expensive, but the skin was very crisp and the meat was tender, which made it feel like a fitting last Munich meal.

The Easiest Walks With a Stroller
All three are workable, but Nymphenburg and Hofgarten felt easiest. The English Garden is still manageable, but because it is so large, it becomes easy to accidentally turn a stroller day into a longer day than planned.

The Best Option In Colder Weather
Hofgarten plus a shorter English Garden section worked best for us when the weather was cold because it was easy to shorten. Nymphenburg still works, but it is more exposed and can feel longer once the temperature drops.
When Munich is cold, the best family routes are the ones you can stop early without feeling the day failed.
Our recommendation
If you only have one easy green day in Munich, choose:
- Hofgarten plus part of the English Garden if you want the better mix of city and park
- Nymphenburg if you want the calmer, more spacious half-day
If you want the more crowded central-city counterpart, pair one of these with Munich Old Town With Kids: Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, and Warm Indoor Stops.
